Hello! You have a talent worth sharing -- please consider teaching a workshop at Scarlet Star Studios, a retreat for art exploration and creative self-expression. My primary goals are to share a space I love, encourage artists to explore new mediums, and provide teachers an opportunity to broaden their reach. Scarlet Star Studios is an ideal place for instructors to round out their teaching schedules or try a new class in a place that welcomes creative experiments. If you're interested in teaching a workshop, please contact us and include your contact information, a brief course description, a brief instructor bio, workshop price and an idea of dates you would prefer and we'll go from there. I'm looking forward to working with you!

Details:

  • Teachers receive 70% of the cost of the class. We promote lower-cost workshops to encourage participants to explore new mediums, but want to insure artists are paid for their time and expertise. You may set you own price or use our formula ($10/hr +$10). We will handle the administration of the class (scheduling, registration, payments, most supplies, snacks, setup & cleanup) so you can focus on preparing for and working with your students. If you want me to remain during the class & assist, then you will receive 50% of the cost of the class.

  • After working with you to help determine an irresistable title & promotional copy for your workshop, we will promote your workshop to the studio's various event & discussion lists (over 350 people), our website, Soapstone (if the class is $25 or less), DIY Alert, Craigslist, Portland Mercury online classifieds, Willammette Week online classifieds, Portland Art Net, and other online resources. But you are your own best promoter; you are encouraged to promote the classes on your own as long as the primary contact is Scarlet Star Studios so that we have less chaos for everyone (you may modify & distribute our announcements as you see fit). We have an extensive flyer list divided by region you are welcome to use, as well.

  • Scarlet Star Studios is an intimate & configurable space that can hold up to 10 inspired students comfortably, depending on the activity. We believe smaller classes are good for both student-teacher interaction and student-student interaction. I have a low minimum requirement for participants (2) and would prefer not to cancel or move a class if at all possible: anyone who makes the effort to try something new should not be discouraged!

  • We offer a stock of diverse & unusual art materials and a fully-equipped kitchen & bathroom. We're located directly below the Powell Butte Nature Park and are not far from the Springwater Corridor Trail. If you have a special setup you want to create, let's work it out as soon as possible, at least a week before the class begins. You are welcome & encouraged to schedule a walk-through of your workshop to ensure the flow of your workshop and the best use of the space.

  • I prefer to have all supplies for students available at the workshop rather than sending a materials list beforehand. You may charge a materials fee if you're bringing things the studio doesn't offer. But if you want the students to bring something, please be specific in your requests, even if they seem obvious (like paper & pen). Don't know what we have? Ask or arrange a visit!

  • I highly recommend creating a handout with your contact information, the date, and some simplified instructions. In three months your students will really appreciate it! You are welcome to include other classes you are teaching so that those who are interested may pursue more advanced instruction.

  • Our philosophy: because Scarlet Star Studios is a retreat for art exploration & encourages creative self-expression, workshops are primarily offered to introduce (or re-introduce) participants to an art form. Please avoid accidentally fostering competition or conformity. If you lead a discussion or give feedback, please remember that creativity flourishes in a place of safety and acceptance. Criticism, if used at all, should build on strengths rather than focus on weaknesses. Even positive comments sometimes enforce the idea that only "good" art is worth making and can foster competition instead of community. Instead of judging the aesthetics of the work, help the artist find meaning in it. Also, please give participants enough opportunity & gentle encouragement to contribute, but we advise against requiring people to participate; trust the artist to know what s/he is capable of sharing at that moment.
